Different expectations societies have for men, women, girls and boys contribute to gender inequality, social exclusion, and repeated cycles of violence and conflict at all levels.
Our work
Transforming gender norms is crucial for building peace, especially in places affected by conflict. When women and girls are free of discrimination and inequality, we also unlock their full potentials, fostering social cohesion and stability, ultimately paving the way for sustainable peace.
Saferworld challenges and transforms the gender norms that drive violent conflict and gender-based violence and supports the leadership of women and girls in building peace. This means both acting and thinking differently about integrating gender perspectives and equal participation at all levels to make peace possible.
Our commitments
To partner and work in solidarity with more women-led and youth-led organisations, groups, coalitions and networks. We will support our partners’ proposals and projects, advocate with them, share resources and take a step back where needed.
To develop research, guidelines and programming tools that help our understanding of how deeply embedded gender norms contribute to repeating cycles of conflict and violence.
To challenge and transform harmful and exclusionary gender norms – and related attitudes, behaviours and relationships – that perpetuate insecurity and violence.
To carry out research and advocacy on women’s peace and security, and gender-transformative peacebuilding practices – building practical approaches that are useful for others.
